10 BOOKS THAT HELPED ME GET THROUGH DENTAL HYGIENE SCHOOL

Dental hygiene school is HARD.

It’s hard mentally, physically and emotionally.

Having a book resting on my end-stand was often the very thing I needed to bring me to a more balanced mind despite all the sweat and tears of hygiene school.

#1: You Are A Badass: This book felt so straight-up and helped me literally feel confident. The chapters are short which were perfect since there was a ton of reading on my to-do list anyhow.

#2: Girl, Wash Your Face. This is another gem that also helped me uncover false beliefs about myself and be the confident woman I was meant to be! Great read!

#3: The F*ck It Diet. Okay, this may not be something you expect but its beyond necessary. Through all the stress of school, exams, patients - your may be feeling some guilt about your diet and exercise (or lack there of). This book may help ease your mind around dieting/restriction, so you can actually spend your time focused on school. She’s a light writer and made me laugh!

#4: Girl, Stop Apologizing. I remember in hygiene school there was a classmate of mine that was told by our professor that she better start growing a backbone once she’s out in the real world of patients. She giggled, but it’s true. Patients can be rude for no reason sometimes and I think this book will help you throughout school and as you approach the first few years in the ‘real world’.

#5: How to Do the Work. This book is amazing! The author is a great writer despite some science-y terms. She teaches you how to heal yourself from your past so you can create your future on your terms.

#6: Don’t Keep Your Day Job gave me a great perspective on what it means to pursue your passion and if you’re passionate about making dental hygiene a career, it will help keep you focused. It may also help you get creative or try something new.

#7: Verity by Colleen Hoover. This was an easy read and it definitely was a good distraction from hygiene school and 'life’. So if you’re looking for a book to get your mind of things and escape reality for a bit, this is the one for you!

#8: The Art of Saying No. This book will give you a realistic approach on how to say ‘no’. Saying no can feel icky sometimes, don’t you think? So if you’re someone that has trouble telling your friends what you really feel, read this!

#9: Untamed By Glennon Doyle. Super cute and easy-to-read book that helps you learn how to be yourself and be true to you. There may be a lot of moments where you compare yourself to others or do things you really don’t enjoy throughout hygiene school and this book may give you perspective on how to let your intuition be your guide despite what others may think or say.

#10: Let it Be Easy by Susie Moore. This book gives you great ‘let it be easy’ advice on every aspect of your life. Hygiene school is something you may take very seriously (and I don’t blame you because I did too) and this book may help calm your nerves and stop stressing about things that are not in your control.
